ABSTRACT

ABSTRACT: Self-medication exposes individuals to risks such as adverse reactions, intoxications, drug interactions, therapeutic failures and medication errors. In the COVID-19 pandemic, there was an increase in the purchase and consumption of pharmaceutical products by Brazilians. The present study aimed to estimate the prevalence and factors associated with self-medication in students of a university center in the region of Campo das Vertentes, Southeastern Brazil, as well as to evaluate the incidence during the COVID-19 pandemic. The study had a cross-sectional and quantitative design, with 248 students from a university, in 2021. The findings showed that 67.3% of the participants reported self-medication; 28.7% indicated an increase in self-medication during the pandemic; and 30.9% indicated the beginning in this period. There was a significant difference about: to consider oneself capable of self-medicating, to have the habit of referring drugs to other people and to consume them by indication of others. For those who increased the practice of self-medication in the pandemic, there was an association with the habit of indicating drugs to other people. For those who initiated this practice in the pandemic period, the capacity of self-medication was associated. The results open paths for educational measures on the irrational use of medicines by higher education students, regardless of the education area.

Introduction: The high consumption of medicines is associated with factors that favor their inappropriate use and possible consequences in the therapeutic objective, the control of the disease. Objective: To characterize possible drug interactions as a health concern for the general population and the healthcare system prescribers. Methods: Descriptive and cross-sectional study. Series of cases of practical consequences with elements of a therapeutic scheme. Population of 214 individuals consuming drugs, aged 18-89 years, randomly selected by stratified probabilistic sampling. The setting was the primary care clinics (9 and 10) and internal medicine consultations of hospital institutions in Cienfuegos, Cuba. The period was the first trimester of the year 2017. The variables investigated were the sociodemographic ones, type of prescription, pharmacological groups, and possible drug interactions. Results: The average consumption was 10.5 among elderly women. Out of 365 prescriptions, 54.2 percent were possible drug interactions, while those of the pharmacokinetic type (95.4 percent) predominated, together with those related to the metabolism of self-medication (34.3 percent), as well as the consumption of omeprazole or other nonpharmacological substance inhibitors of CYP-450, such as grapefruit juice and chronic alcohol consumption. Tobacco was the inducer that most identified (25, 58.1 percent), leading to possible therapeutic failures. Conclusion: Possible drug interactions were presented as an imperceptible health concern for the healthy and sick population. Healthcare prescribers generally do not take them into account, for which those at highest risk are related to oxidative metabolism inhibitors, which leads to possible damage to human health(AU)

ABSTRACT

ABSTRACT

Background: Lymphatic filariasis caused by nematode parasite is a public health problem in India. Filariasis in man manifests as acute and chronic lymphangitis, elephantiasis of genitalia arms, legs, hydrocele in males and lymphadenitis. The Government of India incorporated initial National Filaria Control Programme under the National Vector Born Disease Control Program (NVBDCP) with a goal of eliminating the disease as Public Health Problem by targeted date of year 2016. Aim: Aim of the study was to test the hypothesis that reducing “MICRO FILARAEMIA” in humans to <1% will stop transmission by mass administration of two drug for more than 5 Annual rounds with 65% coverage of total population. Materials and methods: The study was retrospective prospective analytical study from 2010 to 2014 (from coverage evaluation reports) of Medak dist. There is need to enhance community participation to cover more than 65% of total population for future 5 years. Results: The distribution of the drugs was carried to 68% of rural population and 18% of urban population. The effectiveness was only 57.7% of rural and 16% of urban population. The drug P. Samuel Rajkumar, Tukaram Kishanrao Pandve, G. Nagaiah, Sayyad Tajmul, Bansode Arun, NS Inamdar. An Operational Research on Annual Mass Drug Administration (MDA) For Elimination of Lymphatic Filariasis in Medak District, Telangana. IAIM, 2016; 3(7): 239-244. Page 240 compliance was 81% in rural and 87% in urban respectively. The coverage of the population for MDA by using DEC plus Albendazole tabs was 74.7% and 15.3% in rural and urban areas of Medak district respectively. But the actual effectiveness was observed 68% in rural and 15.3 % of urban population. However the drug compliance was found 91% of total population. 79.3% of respondents were aware of MDA trough banners / posters only. All other available Medias were found to be nonfunctional. Conclusion: MDA coverage was more in rural population in comparison with urban population. Major reasons for noncompliance having some underlying disease (40%), fear of side effects (18%) which can be overcome by intensification of IEC activities. In order to achieve the goal of elimination of lymphatic filariasis there is need to intensify IEC activates about modes of transmission and methods of prevention at community levels by all modes of communication so as increase the coverage with drugs.

ABSTRACT

This article summarized a group of lectures on the world drug industry delivered from 2010 to 2013 in a number of national and international fora. Taking into account that a pharmaceutical is a social asset used to prevent diseases and recover human health, the behavior of the drug production and consumption worldwide shows a awkward overview in terms of the real needs of the population. An analysis was made on the elements involved in such behavior, beginning with a characterization of the world current drug industry and analyzing three aspects related to the results: medical-drug research, medical promotion and information and operation of the national drug regulatory agencies. The world drug industry has provided huge benefits for the treatment of diseases and this is an undeniable fact; however, the Big Pharma needs to be profitable. Globalization and neoliberalism have created patterns of incentives and behaviors mainly based on the market interests. We should be aware of that in the future. This new century poses new challenges for the peoples, their governments and for the Big Pharma in terms of health, disease and how to face it(AU)

ABSTRACT

Introduction: sexuality, and alcohol and drug consumption by adolescents currently appear as high priority issues for the public health. The concern lies in reducing the risks of sexually transmitted infections, the human immunodeficiency virus and the early unwanted pregnancies. Objectives: to analyze the sexual behaviors under the effect of alcohol and other drug consumption and the inherent risks in adolescents living in Medellin city. Methods: the sample was selected through the random and cluster probabilistic method. The universe of study covered the total number of 8th, 9th, 10th and 11th students from the public and private schools of Medellin in 2010. The age of the 91 857 students ranged 14 to 17 years. The final sample included 955 students, using a 95 % confidence interval. A cross-sectional descriptive study was designed to find out the sexual practices and risks of adolescents under the influence of alcohol and other drug consumption. The SPSS program, version 19.0 served to set frequencies, percentages and statistical associations. Results: taking alcohol or other drugs and having sexual intercourse exhibit a significant statistical association (p=0.000). In the study group, 62.4 % of the adolescents who had taken some psychoactive substances had sexual intercourse whereas 29.4% who had also taken alcohol and other drugs had not. Alcohol was the most used drug (79.8%), followed by marihuana (31.83 %), poppers (8.97 %), cocaine (7.75 %) and ecstasy (5.71 %). The most frequent sexual practices under the above-mentioned conditions were exploratory ones such as body touching and caressing (71.02 %); vaginal penetration (63.67 %), oral sex (45.30 %) and masturbation (19.59 %). Of those adolescents who had sexual practices (n= 561) under the influence of drugs, 12.47 % were unprotected, being sexually transmitted diseases (2 %) and unwanted pregnancy (2.8 %) the main consequences. There was no statistically significant association (p= 0.711) between having sexual intercourse under the effect of alcohol or not and the use of sexual protection methods. Conclusions: the study confirmed the results of other research studies about the frequent association between the drug consumption and the sexual practices of adolescents. The new contributions of this study were to show the types of sexual practices under the effect of psychoactive substances, many of which are not risk-free, and to stress the need of including further actions in the preventive programs for safe sex, in order to minimize the harms that the sexual practice under the effect of these substances consumption may cause.

ABSTRACT

Abstract In view of the widespread use of licit and illicit in most of the Western world, we suspect that there were not so many and so serious the damages that they cause, as stated, and we decided to assess the strength of such suspicion. The suspicion was correct in terms of physical health of individual users, as drugs do not appear among the top fifteen causes of morbidity or mortality in the population of Mexico, USA, Canada, Spain, the United Kingdom and the Netherlands. However, drugs do cause psychological and social harm to the individual by promoting motivational indolence, serious psychotic symptoms potentially irreversible, and induce the commission of risky behaviors (traffic accidents) and even criminals (robbery, assault, rape). Drug use also damages the integrity and economy of the families of users and harms to the community, since it raises the rate of unemployment, lower tax revenues, increase costs of development programs, safety and welfare, and favor the exclusion of users in the workplace, schools, clubs and various utilities. Our results are of interest for the design of actions to control drug use to be consistent with the type, severity and extent of the individual and social harm that drugs cause.

ABSTRACT

Introduction: population aging represents a challenge for all the societies, hence it is necessary that the human resources devoted to take care of aged persons be well documented for the adequate drug and therapeutic management of this particular population, which is highly vulnerable due to its comorbidity and its particular drug response. Objective: to determine the interrelation between comorbidity, functional state and drug consumption. Method: a cross-sectional and descriptive study was carried out, which included all 60 and over years-old patients, admitted to Calixto García hospital in 2007. The response variables were comorbidity, functional deterioration and multiple drug consumption. Data was collected on a random sample of 267 patients. An automatically-validated database was created to confirm congruency. Results: the greatest use of drugs was found in the 80 to 89 years old age group. It was found that 263 older people (98.5 percent) suffered comorbidity and 211 of them (79 percent) took 5 drugs as an average. The oldest persons accounted for the worst functional state evaluation, the highest index of comorbidity and the greatest use of drugs. Conclusions: both comorbidity and functional deterioration are closely related to drug consumption in the older people, all of which has a negative impact on their health state. It is indispensable that the primary health professionals pay special attention to the drug and therapeutic management of the older adults under their care

ABSTRACT

Introduction In the international context, Mexico is a country with low drug use level, in turn, it shows an increase when considering the most recent epidemiologic trends. In order to maintain an updated analysis of drug use in general population and to identify the most at risk groups, the National Survey of Addictions (ENA) was held in 2011. Objetive The aim of the study was to determine the lifetime prevalence for any drug and any illegal drug use at a national and regional level, in population aged 12 to 65 years. Also, to acknowledge drug consumption trends since 2002 in Mexico. Material and methods ENA 2011 survey is a randomized, multistage probabilistic study. It is representative at a national level and also for eight regions of the country, including rural and urban population. The sample was 3 849 adolescents and 12 400 adults who answered a computerized version of a standardized questionnaire containing sections of tobacco, alcohol, medical drugs (opiates, tranquilizers, sedatives, amphetamines) and illegal drugs (marijuana, cocaine, crack, hallucinogens, inhalants, heroin and methamphetamines). All participants read and signed an informed consent. Emphasis was made on the voluntary and confidential use of the information. Results The national lifetime prevalence of any drug grew between 2002 and 2011, increasing significantly from 5.0% to 7.8%, while consumption of any illegal drugs increased from 4.1% to 7.2%. By sex, in men, any drug use increased from 8.6% to 13%. Illegal drugs increased from 8.0% to 12.5%. In women, use of any drug increased from 2.1% to 3.0% and use of any illegal drug increased from 1.0% to 2.3%. Marijuana is the first drug of choice (6.5%) followed by cocaine (3.6%). Considering regions, any drug consumption grew significantly in the Western (5.5% to 10.3%), Northeast (5.5% to 10.3%), North Central (7.5% to 9.2%) and South Central (4.2% to 7.5%). As for illegal drugs, there is also a statistically significant increase in these regions, however, growth was proportionally bigger in South Central region, going from 3.5% to 6.8%. Conclusions Results from this study indicate a growth in the consumption of illegal drugs from 2002 to 2011, especially in marijuana. It also shows that men from 18 to 34 years are the most affected by this consumption, while increases in adolescent men have been low. Moreover, the study shows that those who have received some type of prevention, showed a smaller consumption prevalence, indicating that further work is needed in this area with young people to consolidate activities of health promotion and drug use prevention, working with infant population is needed, including a systematic evaluation of the actions mentioned above. In the international context, data from this study confirms that Mexico continues reporting low levels of drug consumption.

ABSTRACT

The objective of this study is to compare the declared licit and illicit drug consumption, between paired methodology (MP) and self assessed questionnaire (CAR). We suggest that understatement of illicit drug use will be minimized with the use of peer methodology, and that licit drug understatement will not be affected using peer methodology. The population of this study is composed by male school students ranging between middle and high School. The sample reached to 301 students. The results obtained regarding illicit drug consumption in the year, tend to be higher using MP compared with the CAR. Similarly, last month consumption reached a higher prevalence using MP than using CAR. There are no significant differences in both samples, during both periods. Nevertheless, in the last 12 months, illicit drug consumption doubled the CAR report in comparison to MP. Regarding drug consumption in the last 30 days, the results also showed that CAR underestimated half of the rate stated using MP. Illicit drug consumption is significantly higher using MP, than CAR, in both periods that were studied. Illicit consumption rates of in the past year and in the last month are significantly higher using MP, particularly with Marihuana. There are no statistical differences in the same periods, regarding licit drug consumption rate, as alcohol and tobacco.
